Are Owls Dangerous? The Truth About Owls

Are Owls Dangerous?

Owls are normally not dangerous until their territory or young are in threat, but if they need to protect themselves, they will! They have repeatedly assaulted unwary joggers and hikers. However, victims are frequently able to flee unharmed, and owl assaults are relatively rare.

Owls are amazingly swift and light on their feet. They can fly very swiftly, even when carrying prey in their talons, after which they will often sit motionless for hours or days to conserve energy. Their descent down from trees is also controlled with uncanny precision making them exceptionally lethal from the air.

Why do people fear Owls?

The common view of an owl in the shadows—especially when nocturnal, while people are using torches or other artificial light sources for illumination—is often associated with malevolence. This association may have come about because long ago, owls were symbols of death or destruction. Some cultures believed that owls were omen of death. In Britain, some scholars claim that stories of people becoming ill or dying during the night and finding owls sitting on their windowsills might imitate a “vocation”. This is similar to superstitions associated with aliens and UFOs. Other researchers believe this association has very little foundation in reality. There are several reasons why owls are generally not feared or considered malicious.

Are Owls Dangerous to Humans?

Owls are opportunistic predators that can take advantage of their nocturnal nature to hunt small mammals such as mice and voles. They also eat other birds, lizards, frogs, fish, and insects. However, they do not hunt humans so often because people have a very strong protective instinct toward owls and they do not see them as potential threats. On the other hand, it is also partly due to caution: many people believe that if an owl is spotted, they should never approach its nest box or roosting site for safety reasons.

Are Owls A Gentle Bird?

They are only aggressive toward people who inadvertently enter their territory—either they feel threatened by the intruder or think they can capture an easy meal. Still, owls seem to be quite peaceful with each other and will sometimes hoot back and forth across a distance without ever touching each other. Research has shown that their nocturnal lifestyle means owls have to be extremely cautious and alert during the day as well. For this reason, humans should understand that they are very unpredictable because if startled by a human during daylight hours, an owl might become aggressive. In further fear of humans, it has been observed that even nest boxes attract young owls who may attempt to pull down a human intruder.

Can Owls Be Dangerous to Your Pets?

Owls can be devastating predators to most small birds and mice, but they will usually only attack the weakest of prey. Owls make no attempt to hunt larger animals such as dogs or cats or any other domestic pets. However, it has been observed that owls do enjoy eating pet food left down for household pets. Very few predators can get access to and pick up a very large bird off the ground while flying in protected areas such as an owl’s nest cavity or roosting site. Due to this fact, most keepers of pet birds suggest that those species, such as many budgies and parakeets, should be kept indoors to ensure their security.
